Local knowledge

What driving in Northenden is actually like

The roads and junctions you will meet here, and why each is worth practising on purpose rather than stumbling into.

Palatine Road in Northenden village: red-brick shop parades, parked cars on both sides and a bus in the traffic 01

Palatine Road (A5145)

The village high street: shops, buses, cars parked on both sides and pedestrian crossings every hundred yards. Slow-moving, close-quarters driving that tests observation and clutch control rather than nerve. Once you can hold your position through here in the afternoon, most town driving feels easy.

The M60 junction 5 interchange where Princess Parkway crosses the motorway, with slip roads and overhead direction signs 02

Junction 5 of the M60 and Princess Parkway (A5103)

Northenden's junction: a large interchange where Princess Parkway crosses the M60, with slip roads in every direction. Choosing a lane early, reading overhead signs and merging at speed, practised deliberately once the basics are solid, and a short run from Pass Plus motorway work later on.

A quiet residential street in Northenden sloping down towards the trees along the River Mersey 03

The streets down to the river

Ford Lane, Boat Lane, Kenworthy Lane and the roads off them: quiet, mostly residential, with the Mersey and the golf course at the bottom. Where a complete beginner does their first hour, and where we come back to for turning in the road and reversing round a corner.

A wide, quiet road running alongside Wythenshawe Park, with railings and mature trees on one side and houses on the other 04

Wythenshawe Park and the estate roads

Wythenshawe Road past the park leads into the wide, generously spaced garden-city roads that make Wythenshawe one of the best places locally to learn. Two minutes from the village, and the natural next step up from the riverside streets.

Your test centre is set by the DVSA when you book and can change. Once you have a date we will confirm which routes to practise and build them into your final lessons.

Straight answers

Booking in Northenden

If yours isn't here, ring us. We answer our own phone between lessons.

I've never driven at all. Where would we start?

On the quiet residential streets between Palatine Road and the river, or two minutes away on the wide estate roads by Wythenshawe Park. Nowhere with a queue of traffic behind you.

Do you cover Northern Moor and Sharston?

Yes. All of M22 and M23 is inside the free pick-up area, so Northern Moor, Sharston, Baguley and Wythenshawe are all covered. Didsbury and Chorlton are just over the border: ring and ask, and we will usually make it work.

How much are lessons?

Standard lessons are £37 an hour, or £350 for a 10 hour standard lesson block booking. That block offer applies to standard lessons only, not to specialist lessons or intensive courses. Intensive courses are £760 for 20 hours and £1,140 for 30. Specialist lessons for additional learning needs are £42 an hour. Full price list.

What car will I learn in?

Lessons are currently in a manual, dual-controlled car — and a manual licence covers you for automatics too once you pass.
